The Regional Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)’s North-East office, Fatu Florence Kamara, has called on police personnel attached to the Mena, Rogbaneh, and Panlap Police Divisions in Makeni to take the fight against corruption seriously by desisting from corrupt practices.
She made this call during sensitization meetings at the Mena Police field and the AIG’s office respectively on Wednesday 15th October 2025. Director Kamara re-echoed the existing strong relationship between the ACC and the Sierra Leone Police as evident by a memorandum of understanding to foster effective partnership and collaboration. She noted that police personnel are therefore required to exhibit high level of integrity and ethics.
Director Kamara stressed that integrity is paramount to public service delivery, describing it as a solid shield against corruption. She urged the police officers to strive to uphold foremost the ethics of their job, in order to avoid conflict with the anti-corruption laws and to gain public trust.
At a separate engagement with senior officers and commanders of the three police divisions, the ACC Director urged them to constantly supervise their personnel in order to prevent the occurrence of corruption. She lamented increasing public reports of alleged corruption involving police personnel demanding payment for bail and recording of complaints. “Bail is free and nobody should be asked to pay any amount before his or her report is recorded. These practices amount to punishable offence as enshrined in the Anti-Corruption Act, 2008 (Amended in 2019),” she emphasised.
In his statement, the ACC Regional Manager, Al-Hassan Sesay, encouraged the police personnel to desist from corrupt practices and uphold work ethics as well as maintain integrity while performing their duties. He also urged them to protect the image of the SLP and build public confidence through positive actions.
Responding to the anti-graft messages the AIG North East, Manfred Williams, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, thanked the ACC team for the sensitization drive. He admitted that regular engagements of similar nature would positively change the mindset and behaviour of police personnel. AIG Williams urged all police commanders present to effectively monitor their subordinates and implement corrective measures. “This is the time for police personnel to build public trust and not to dent the image of the SLP. We have to constantly remind our personnel of their obligation to protect the good image of the SLP and desist from corrupt practices” he stressed.
The AIG informed ACC team about the existence of Integrity Management Committees in the different divisions and plans towards making them effective and vibrant.
