WOMEN TAKE THE CHALLENGE TO LEAD CORRUPTION FIGHT

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been very strategic in making sure that corruption of any form is tackled through prevention, prosecution and public awareness activities. Therefore, in its resolve, to strengthen the preventive drive and affirmative action towards women, two female staff have been appointed to serve as Managers for the Commission’s North-East Region and Kono sub-regional offices.

In the North-East Region, Mariama Navo takes over from Abu Bakarr Kamara who served as Regional Manager for almost four years; whilst Hawanatu Tejan is now at the helm of affairs at the Kono Office. Mr. Kamara has been transferred to Freetown to manage another unit. During his reign, the Commission strengthened its alliance with public sector institutions, the media, civil society organisations, and reached out to people in the nook and cranny of the region, not only to heighten public knowledge on issues of corruption but to also seek their support for the fight.

The outgoing Manager introduced Miss Navo to various stakeholders at the Provincial Security Committee (PROSEC) meeting and later paid courtesy call on Paramount Chief Bombali Shebora, PC Bai Shebora KasangaII, the Bombali District Medical Officer Dr. Foday Sesay and members of the District Health Management Team, among others. In his valedictory remarks Mr. Kamara commended partners for their support and appealed to them to continue working with his successor, because “fighting corruption is not about an individual but the nation”. The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to take appropriate action to tackle corruption in-house and promised to continue to join forces with the ACC to suppress the scourge of corruption.

Prior to her new role as Regional Manager North-East, Miss Navo was Implementation Analyst at the National Anti-Corruption Strategy Secretariat. In her statement, she applauded the spectacular commitment demonstrated by local authorities to always partner with the Commission to combat corruption. The Manager acknowledged the challenge in fighting corruption in rural areas and guaranteed the people of the region that under her watch she would do all it takes to ensure that public sector institutions work in the interest of the people.

Miss Navo commended Mr. Kamara for his achievements as Manager and wished him the best of luck in his new role. She heaped praises on staff of the region for their dedicated service over the years and assured them that she came to the region to serve and to leave a legacy.

This action by the Commission to entrust leadership position in the hands of women in the regions signals inclusivity in the fight, as no one should be left behind.
